This is the first post in my new monthly journal — a space where I’ll be sharing design tips, inspiration, and ideas, along with some of my favourite finds and behind-the-scenes insights. Whether you're redecorating a single room or simply looking for a fresh perspective, I hope this becomes a go-to resource for thoughtful, characterful interiors.
Here are five simple tips to refresh your home with classic style and a modern twist, using antiques, art, textiles, and lighting to create a space that feels layered, curated, and uniquely yours.
1. You don’t have to start with wall colour.
People often assume the best place to start when decorating a room is by choosing a wall colour, but that’s not always the right approach. I recommend beginning with something more personal and inspiring, like a favourite fabric, a colourful rug, or a piece of art that you love. These elements can provide a beautiful foundation for your palette and help guide the rest of the design.
If you're unsure where to begin, look around your home or even inside your wardrobe. Is there a colour you’re consistently drawn to? A painting you’ve always loved. Using that as your starting point ensures the space reflects your personality and makes it much easier to build a layered, cohesive scheme around it.
2. Incorporate Antiques and Vintage Finds
One of the best ways to bring character and personality into your interiors is through antiques and vintage pieces. These add history and depth, making your space unique and layered. Mixing antique furniture with contemporary decor or art creates a striking contrast that feels thoughtfully curated, a hallmark of classic interior design with a modern twist.
3. Play with Texture and Layering
Layering different textures is essential to creating warm and inviting interiors. Combine soft fabrics like linen or velvet with smooth woods, aged metals, and handcrafted ceramics. Mixing patterns — from classic florals and checks to updated geometrics, adds interest and depth without overwhelming the space. Textured cushions, throws, and rugs are simple but effective ways to introduce comfort and character.
4. Add Artful Details
Art is a wonderful way to bring personality and modern energy into classic interiors. Whether it’s a bold contemporary painting, a sculptural piece, or a curated gallery wall, art injects individuality into your home. I love mixing traditional frames with abstract pieces to keep the look fresh, eclectic, and meaningful, something I often explore during design consultations.
5. Embrace Modern Lighting
Lighting is one of the most transformative elements in any room. Swapping outdated fixtures for modern alternatives, think statement pendants, sculptural lamps, or elegant wall lights can instantly elevate your space. I always recommend layering your lighting using a mix of ambient, task, and accent sources to create both atmosphere and flexibility throughout the day.
